Joe Stump Masterclass - English

Hello Guitar fans; And welcome to gitarturk.com`s new site: Masterclass. Each month in this section we will take a close look at a lick, concept or an idea performed and demonstrated by a respected guitar virtuoso. Our first guest is Reign of Terror-Holy Hell guitarist, Berklee College of Music Professor and solo artist Joe Stump. Joe began terrorizing the metal scene in the 80 s with his steroid injected aggressive guitar work, having the best combination of modern technique and old school groove. He reached into a ``guitar hero`` status in no time and he is a very good proof that a player doesn`t have to sacrifice one aspect of guitar playing in order to improve his chops.

Before you begin, make a note that Joe tunes his guitars a half step down to: Eb.

The lick is in E harmonic minor/B Phrygian dominant. E harmonic minor meaning an E minor scale (E-F#-G-A-B-C-D-E) with a raised 7thdegree (E-F#-G-A-B-C-D#-E) And B Phrygian dominant is the 5th mode of E harmonic minor consisting of the same notes but starting on the note B. Because of the raised 7th degree the licked can be played over a B major groove. If you notice the lick includes both the raised (D#) and the natural 7th degree (D) as well. This mixed minor concept is used very commonly in this style of guitar playing depending on the groove and players taste.

The lick starts on F# and follows a three notes per string pattern. Depending on your taste you can either use strict alternate picking (Meaning picking pattern consisting of strict up and down strokes or economy picking (Meaning not changing the direction of the picking while moving on to the next string set. (Economy picking pattern shown on the example) This is the way Joe Stump does it almost every time when he is doing this type of ascending runs that has more then 2 notes on a string. But descending is always alternate picked. Then when descending; the passage moves to the B box and the lick is continued to be played with the 6 notes of the scale (hexatonic) going back to the root and then continuing to the octave manner. This is a concept that Joe uses all the time that adds variety to these types of passages.

Next; Joe blasts his way through with pedal tone ideas, very classical sounding and the last section of the lick is just the scale played in seconds meaning: Playing the first two notes of the scale and then descending to the next scale degree and play next two set of notes and continue this pattern until the target note, which in our case is the: D# on the 5th string, 6th fret. The lick ends with the: B power chord. Practice the lick slow with the metronome and then up to tempo. Good luck.
