George Bellas Masterclass - English

Hello guitar fans! For our 3rd masterclass we are proud to have a very special guitar virtuoso: George Bellas.

George has broken the generic sound of the neoclassical guitar scene with innovative concepts such as chromaticism, odd meters, contemporary harmony, and clever use of tensions.

He combines all of this with a very carefully orchestrated progressive style and masterful guitar work. It should be noted that his classical approach follows the rules of counterpoint rather than simply playing lines that sound classical. A look at Bellas' counterpoint provides a great study for the practicing guitarist.

Lesson 1 : " Pivot Arpeggios with Scale Descent "

In this example an entire chord is used as a central pivot point while playing a simple descending melody in the upper part.

The progression is in Dm and begins with a i6 (1st inversion tonic) that proceeds to a linear V6/4 (second inversion dominant) which resolves to i (root position tonic) then to a V6/5 (1st inversion dominant 7th) and ?nally to a perfect authentic cadence. (V-i)

The Progression: i6 - V6/4 - i - V6/5 - i

Lesson 2 : " Melodic Scale Pattern "

This example is in the key of Gm. The basis of the pattern is simply an ascending melodic pattern within the G Harmonic minor scale. Economy picking is used for this example. In other words, alternate pick everything, but when switching strings employ a sweep pick. (Picking pattern shown on the tablature )

On the next video( Example 2) George demosnrates how to apply a counterpuantial idea to the existing melodic pattern he played in Lesson 2. This time the piano plays the melodic pattern 2a while George applies a desending counterpoint to it. Analysis of the relationship between the two lines especiaaly the intervalic relationship would be a good starting study for learning caounterpoint.
